Australian Open Kiki Bertens was surprisingly eliminated on Wednesday in the second round of the Australian Open. The Dutch lost in three sets of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (6-3, 3-6 and 3-6).
The exclusion of Bertens is the biggest sensation in the women’s tournament in Melbourne so far. The number nine in the world impressed in the first round against the American Alison Riske (6-3 and 6-3) and went for the title, but there is already a line through that.
In the first set, there was not much going on against Pavlyuchenkova for the 27-year-old Bertens, but the Russian resumed the second and third company and won the match.
Because of the elimination, the spot in the third round of Bertens in 2018 will be her best event ever at the Australian Open. Last year she was eliminated at that stage of the tournament by the later winner Caroline Wozniacki.
