Joao Teixeira de Faria, the Brazilian ‘wonder doctor’ who is involved in sexually abusing more than 300 women, has declared herself to the police. He did this a day after an arrest warrant had expired.
Joao Teixeira de Faria (76) became an international celebrity in 2013 when Oprah Winfrey paid attention to him in one of her television programs. He is now the pivot in what according to prosecutors can be the most prominent abuse case in the history of the country.
“More than 230 women approached us by e-mail and another fifty by telephone,” said prosecutor Luciano Miranda. They come from countries such as Belgium, the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Bolivia Among the accusers is also the Dutch choreographer Zahira Lieneke Mous.
From the Spiritual hospital, The women say they have been sexually abused when they were treated by De Faria. The man, known as ‘Joao de Deus’ (John of God), has been running a spiritual hospital in Abadiania since 1976.
On Friday, an arrest warrant was issued against him. He had to report to the police before Saturday at 2:00 PM. If he did not, he was officially seen as a fugitive.
The Faria denies the accusations. His lawyer announced that he would object to Monday. The ‘miracle doctor’ can end up behind bars for at least ten years if he is found guilty.
