HMRC, a critical British customs system, is in danger of being overburdened by Brexit, putting British exporters in trouble. They are increasingly struggling to obtain the right papers to transport their goods to the EU without delay. According to them, there is not enough staff with authority to provide them.

It is now almost impossible to get the transit documents, according to some UK exporters. “Nobody gets any forms anymore,” Peter Hayes, general manager of freight forwarder Carlton Freight. His Liverpool company exports cars and machines, among other things. “We have already had to reject hundreds of applications.”

UK Customs is aware of the problem. The difficulties would be caused by a recent computer system upgrade. According to customs, the backlog can be made up within a week.

The EU is the UK’s largest trading partner, accounting for 43 percent of the country’s exports in 2019. Before Brexit, it took much less effort to export goods, because the paperwork was hardly ever required. Now businesses are facing delays due to missing or incorrectly completed forms.
