The US President laments unfair economic practices and the repression in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, he wants to continue working with China.
Joe Biden spoke to China’s President Xi Jinping for the first time in his office as US President. According to the White House, Biden criticized the behaviour of the Chinese government in the phone call. He complained about unfair economic practices, repression in Hong Kong and human rights violations in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The US President was also critical of China’s dealings with Taiwan.
Despite the allegations, Biden does not want to rule out cooperation with his Chinese counterpart: “I told him that I would work with China if it were of use to the American people,” said Biden after the conversation. The two phoned just a few hours after Biden’s announcement in the Pentagon that they wanted to review the national security strategy with a view to China.
